Fate series, untangled

Fate isn't one story — it's several continuities from the same visual novel universe, released wildly out of order. Here's the core path that actually makes sense first, with every spin-off toggled off by default.

Why is Fate so confusing?

The original Fate/stay night visual novel has three routes, each spun into its own adaptation, plus a prequel (Zero), plus entirely separate "what if" continuities (Apocrypha, Extra) that reuse the same characters and mythology but don't share a timeline. Fate/Grand Order then remixes elements from all of it. None of that is a mistake to fix — it's just genuinely several stories in one universe.

Do I need to play the visual novel or the games?

No. The path above is anime/movie only — nothing here requires reading the source VN or playing Fate/Grand Order.
